The important work of the Festival Internacional de Música da Póvoa de Varzim, to represent the variety that is our present moment, continues with this current release. This CD showcases extremely recent music: works written in 2007 and 2008. The composers are, for the most part, winners of the young composers contests held by the festival in the last two years, but also include the more seasoned composer, António Pinho Vargas. The current recording presents a variety of styles and media in a striking portrait of the musical (and not only - the figure of Eça de Queirós is directly or indirectly invoked in several of the pieces) influences and concerns of this younger generation’s music. Entrusted to the instruments of some of the most promising young musicians active in Portugal today, this survey of contemporary invention and execution contains orchestral music of Hugo Ribeiro and Ana Seara performed by the Orquestra Sinfónica da Póvoa de Varzim, directed by Osvaldo Ferreira; music for small ensemble of Fátima Fonte and Ana Seara performed by Camerata Senza Misura; a string quartet of António Pinho Vargas played by the Quarteto Verazin; as well as a work for solo piano of Gonçalo Gato performed by Elsa Marques Silva.
