This new disc of solo piano works offers a noteworthy introduction to a young pianist who will, no doubt, continue to be an important advocate for the Contemporary Portuguese music of our time. This series of world-premiere recordings presents a variety of approaches from three different composers from the Algarve, ranging from the neo-classicism of Joaquim Galvão’s Sonatina to the neo-modernism of Cristóvão Silva’s Variações, or Tiago Cutileiro’s stylistic approximation to some American experimental music from the 1970’s. Most of the pieces were composed quite recently - with the pianist João Rosa in mind - and his performances demonstrate the individual approach that only a dedicatee can offer such new repertoire.

REMIX ENSEMBLE - Casa da Música [Double CD]

This, the first commercial recording by the Remix Ensemble consists of both studio and live recordings. Titled “Remix Ensemble Vol. 1,” the CD is a joint edition by Numérica and Casa da Música. 

Chosen for this first recording were works that had already been performed in concert by the Remix Ensemble but that remain unavailable on record. They include works by both Portuguese and foreign composers.

The first CD contains commissions or co-commissions from Casa da Música by composers like Brice Pauset, Nuno Côrte-Real and Miguel Azguime, under the direction of Stefan Asbury.

The second CD consists of rare recordings of works by national and international composers such as, Emmanuel Nunes, Jorge Peixinho, James Dillon and Johannes Maria Staud, in live performances by the Remix Ensemble recorded in 2002 and 2003, under the direction of such illustrious conductors as Rolf Gupta, Jurjen Hempel, Franck Ollu or Stefan Asbury.

Paulo Jorge Ferreira - PERCURSOS

Paulo Jorge Ferreira was born in Lisbon, in 1966. He began his musical studies at the age of five, with professor José António Sousa. In-depth study dedicated to the accordion with his distinguished professor provided him the opportunity to participate in national and international competitions, where he obtained honorable classifications. He completed the Course in Accordion at the Matono Musical Institute. Throughout his musical apprenticeship he attended seminars lead by some of the most prestigious contemporary accordionists. 

He has given recitals both nationally and internationally, namely in France, Mexico, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Macau, and has performed chamber music concerts with esteemed musicians like the pianist Maria João Pires and Maestro António Victorino d’Almeida. He has appeared as a guest musician with both symphony and chamber orchestras, such as, the Beijing Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra, and the Remix Ensemble, working with renowned conductors of international quality.

Paulo Jorge Ferreira has formed an accordion duo along with Pedro Santos, and an accordion and piano duo with Pedro Vasconcelos.

Simultaneously he has also developed activity as a composer, from which the works “Infinito Grego” for two accordions and Suite No. 1, “Images of Pac-Chen” for solo accordion may be highlighted.

He is a member of the jury of the international competition “Coupe Mondiale.”

Paulo Jorge Ferreira is professor at the Superior School of Applied Arts in Castelo Branco, at the Regional Conservatory of Castelo Branco, and at the Conservatory of D. Dinis, in Odivelas.
