João Pedro Oliveira - Electronic and Computer Music

Electronic and Computer Music

I-Tunes:

João Pedro Oliveira (1959) began his musical studies at the Center for Gregorian Studies, continuing his work at the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon, where he graduated the class in organ, oriented by Prof. Sibertin-Blanc. Since 1978 he has dedicated his work to composition, attending Composition Seminars with Emmanuel Nunes. From 1985 to 1990 he studied in the United States with scholarships from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and from the Luso-American Cultural Commission. He studied at Brooklyn College and at the University of New York at Stony Brook, where he obtained the degrees: Doctor of Music in the field of Composition, and Master of Music in the field of Theory.

“…The basic content of this collection of five works brings novel sonorities to the electronic music domain. In a certain manner, it has a component of research, that encompasses the notion of a broadened sonorous palette, which is viewed in different ways in each work. The audible result, no doubt interesting, immerses us in the multiple universe of sounds, displaying a great search at the level of timbral effects….” “This recording is, finally, a praiseworthy undertaking, which constitutes a step in the dissemination of works by Portuguese composers of the new generation…” “...This disc brings together all the electronic music in the catalog of current works by Oliveira....” “... but, it is evident, the musical work is open to a great variety of presuppositions for listening and it is impossible not to recognize an admirable sensibility to sonorous color as a discursive element in these works. Especially seductive is the mysterious sensuality of the “Ilha dos Amores” which concludes the “Tríptico”, inspired by "Os Lusíadas" or in the atmospheric "Silence to Light"... " A disk that attains the level of masterpiece and shows the vivacity of New Portuguese Music.
