Como se Canta e Dança em Paços de Brandão

Como se Canta e Dança em Paços de Brandão

I-Tunes:

Singing and Dancing in Paços de Brandão

Founded in 1949 by Luís Gomes Ferreira Alves and Maria Joana Ferreira Alves, this Group has the goal of preserving, but at the same time, maintaining a living tradition of the songs and dances of Paços de Brandão.

Maria Joana Ferreira Alves collected, arranged and recorded these songs and dances at the first presentation of the Group (1949). This collection, which was intensive, is part of an even larger stockpile of customs and traditions of Paços de Brandão (the number of songs collected, for example, is more than the double that the Folk Group presents in public). Manners of dressing (and the reasons for them), eating habits, mentalities, extremely small specificities in the way of dancing singing, etc… The Folklore Group as it was known since 1949 is the synthesis, drawn from the entire collection - that which seemed of most interest for public presentation. The next year saw the definitive consolidation of the Choral Group, with an invitation to the “Festival of the World’s Choirs” in Llangollen in Wales. It was the first time that a Portuguese Folklore Group performed in the Festival ("Como Elas Cantam in Paços de Brandão" Group). The Group was immediately invited to perform at the BBC in London, with a world-wide radio broadcast. Many concerts in Portugal followed, with the Group passing through the main theaters in the country: Palácio Foz, Estoril Casino, etc… In 1955 the Choral Group added the Dance Group and began to call itself "Como se Canta and Dança in Paços de Brandão\". National and international success was immediate. The Group performed in countries like: the United Kingdom, Denmark (as Portuguese ambassadors), Germany (as Portuguese ambassadors in the NATO conference), France, Spain, Luxemburg, Switzerland and Belgium. In Belgium, the Group participated in the Europália/91-Portugal with the show “Street Festival” staged by Filipe La Féria and with presentations in
Brussels, Namur and Antwerp. In the Expo/02 of Seville, again staged by

Filipe La Féria, the Group participated in the Folklore of “Portugal Day”.
The Group has organized its own International Folklore Festival since 1980 (its 8th Festival was also the 1st Festival of the European Community). The Group has included in its repertoire Christmas songs, some of which are truly from Paços de Brandão. Invited by RTP and at the request of the fado singer, Amália Rodrigues, the Group performed at the party for her 75th birthday, which was broadcast via live transmission by RTP, RTP International and RDP International.
